Animal Fun is a unique program designed to promote motor skills and social skill development in young children aged 3-6 years. Based on imitating animal movements, Animal Fun is an inclusive program that allows children to practice and develop their skills within an imaginative, play environment.
Animal Fun was developed by an inter-disciplinary team of psychologists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists and was evaluated with a 3 year randomised controlled trial in 12 Western Australian Primary schools. Results showed that the children participating in the Animal Fun program showed significant improvement in their motor skills and social skills and a significant decrease in hyperactive and inattentive behaviours when compared to children in the control schools.
This program is suitable for children of all abilities but is particularly beneficial for children with motor coordination problems such as DCD. The program meets Australia HPE Curriculum outcomes for the Foundation Year and all areas of the National Quality Standards.
